The European Union hosted the fourth high-level conference “Our Ocean” in Malta on October 5th and 6th, 2017. Since 2014, the «Our Ocean» conferences aim to inspire joint solutions and ambitious commitments for safe, protected, clean and sustainably managed oceans. “Our ocean, an ocean for life” is the continuation of previous conferences and complements the EU’s initiative on ocean governance, which establishes an agenda to guarantee the future of the oceans around the world, proposing 50 concrete actions.
Among the almost 1,000 participants in the conference, representatives of governments, industry, the research community, civil society and NGOs (such as Surfrider Foundation Europe, a partner in the Life LEMA project) could be found. Surfrider Foundation Europe, on behalf of the project’s partners, expressed the firm commitment of Life LEMA to act against the growing and alarming phenomenon of marine litter, a commitment aimed at contributing to restore the health of Our Ocean and, in particular, of the waters of the Bay of Biscay.
