Surfrider Foundation Europe
Surfrider Foundation Europe (SFE) is an internationally renowned non-profit organization based in Biarritz (France), which mission is to protect and valorize oceans and seas, waves and littoral. Its work is mainly focused on marine litter, water quality, climatic change, maritime transportation, artificialization of the littoral and coastal heritage protection. Thanks to the support of more than 40 groups of volunteers all around Europe and the territorial delegations of Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Bruxelles and Donostia-San Sebastián, SFE have been working for over 25 years on three main axis: research, lobbying and environmental education.
Since 1995, SFE implemented a volunteering international program to encourage participative science among citizens through collection, identification and sorting of marine litter, the “Ocean Initiatives” program.
In Life LEMA, SFE will coordinate the project’s communication and the sensitization of the public in general, by diffusing the problematic. It will also encourage the collaboration of citizens through volunteering and participative science. Finally, it will also coordinate expert groups’ meetings on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the European Funds for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries policies.
